José Álvaro Osorio Balvin, professionally known as J Balvin, was born in Medellín, Colombia, on May 7, 1985. His interest in music began at a young age. At 17, he moved to the United States, where he learned English, a language that would later influence his musical style. Upon returning to Medellín, he gained local recognition by performing in various clubs.

J Balvin's music is primarily rooted in reggaeton, but he has explored a range of genres, including electronica, house music, trap, and R&B. He has collaborated with notable artists such as Pharrell Williams, Major Lazer, and Sean Paul. Despite these collaborations with English-speaking artists, J Balvin predominantly sings in Spanish, aiming to introduce Spanish-language music to a global audience.
