History

The Antlers

The Antlers is an American indie rock band that emerged from Brooklyn, New York, in 2007. Initially conceived as a solo project by vocalist and guitarist Peter Silberman, the band evolved into a collaborative unit. Silberman's early work, including the albums "Uprooted" and "In the Attic of the Universe," was created independently before he joined forces with Michael Lerner and Darby Cicci.

Early Work and the Genesis of "Hospice"

Following the release of two EPs, "Cold War" and "New York Hospitals," Silberman began developing a collection of songs described as an "elegy for his planned disappearance." This personal project coalesced into the critically acclaimed full-length album, "Hospice," independently released in March 2009. The album tells a poignant story of an abusive relationship through the allegorical lens of a hospice worker caring for a patient he develops feelings for, who ultimately succumbs to bone cancer. Silberman has noted the deeply autobiographical nature of the work. The independent release saw unexpected demand, leading the band to reissue the album due to overwhelming sales.

Critical Acclaim and Subsequent Releases

"Hospice" garnered significant critical praise for its narrative depth and musicality, appearing on numerous "Album of the Year" lists. This success led to the band signing with French Kiss Records, who reissued a remastered version of "Hospice" in August 2009. Their follow-up album, "Burst Apart," was released in 2011 to equal critical acclaim, prompting an extensive world tour. The band also released the "(together)" EP in 2011, featuring remixes and covers with various collaborators, followed by the "Undersea" EP in 2012, which included four new songs.

"Familiars" and Beyond

On March 31, 2014, The Antlers announced their fifth studio album, "Familiars," which was released on June 17, 2014, and received widespread critical acclaim. The band's discography also includes "Green to Gold," released in 2021.
