Project-X emerged in 1995 from a collaboration between Torny Gottberg, known for his work in the EBM/Industrial act EFFECT, and Andreas Sandberg, a member of the techno/dance group JSA. Their shared vision was to fuse the raw energy of the EBM scene with the infectious rhythms of techno. Working under rudimentary conditions during the summer of 1995, they produced a demo tape titled "309 Steps Between," a name derived from the precise number of steps separating their respective homes. Initially conceived as a one-off project, the duo was pleased with the outcome and decided to press 150 copies for distribution in record stores.

The search for a band name proved challenging. After exploring numerous options, Gottberg suggested simply calling the project "X," representing the unknown, allowing listeners to form their own interpretations. As both members were still active in their original bands, they added "Project" to the name, thus christening the duo Project-X. The demo tape quickly sold out and garnered positive reviews. Following this success, Gottberg and Sandberg made the decision to leave their respective bands to focus entirely on Project-X. Their live debut occurred the same month at a local festival, where their electronic sound made a striking impression on an audience accustomed to punk and rock acts.
