Laura Mvula, born in Birmingham, is a British soul singer-songwriter whose music has been described by some as "gospeldelia." Growing up in the city's Selly Park and Kings Heath suburbs, Mvula was influenced by the girl band Eternal and honed her vocal talents with Black Voices, an a cappella group founded by her aunt. She further developed her musical foundation by graduating from the Birmingham Conservatoire with a degree in composition.
Mvula began writing songs on her laptop while working as a supply teacher in a Birmingham secondary school. After transitioning to a receptionist role, she sent out two demo tracks to industry professionals. Her musical journey gained momentum when she signed with RCA, a subsidiary of Sony. Her debut extended play, "She," was released on November 16, 2012.
