Formed in 1994, The Hellacopters emerged from Sweden to become a significant force in the garage rock revival. The band was founded by Nicke Andersson (vocals, guitar), Andreas Tyrone "Dregen" Svensson (guitar), Kenny Håkansson (bass), and Robert Eriksson (drums). Andersson, also known as Nick Royale, brought experience from the death metal band Entombed, while Dregen was on a hiatus from Backyard Babies. Initially a side project for Andersson and Dregen, The Hellacopters quickly evolved into Andersson's primary creative outlet.

The band's debut album, Supershitty to the Max!, released in 1996, earned a Swedish Grammi award and established their raw, energetic sound. Shortly before a tour supporting Kiss, keyboardist and percussionist Anders Lindström joined the lineup, becoming a full-time member in 1999. Following the 1998 album Payin' the Dues, Dregen departed to rejoin Backyard Babies. The band continued with touring musicians Mattias Hellberg and Danne Andersson, with Robert Dahlqvist solidifying the lead guitar position in 1999. This stable lineup produced three more studio albums and a cover album, alongside numerous EPs and limited releases.
