History

Amir Mohamed: The Creative Force Behind Oddisee

Born in Washington, D.C., Amir Mohamed, known professionally as Oddisee, is a producer and emcee whose music reflects a rich tapestry of cultural influences. Raised in the U.S. capital, he spent summers in Khartoum, Sudan, immersing himself in Arabic language and culture. His upbringing was a vibrant mix of sounds, from the hip-hop of New York and the Go-Go rhythms of D.C. to his father's oud melodies and gospel music. Oddisee's early musical journey began in the basement studio of his neighbor, Garry Shider of Parliament-Funkadelic, where he first explored production and emceeing.

Musical Evolution and Influences

Oddisee's career gained significant momentum after producing and performing on the track "Musik Lounge" for DJ Jazzy Jeff's "Magnificent" LP. Working at A Touch of Jazz studios, he incorporated the neo-soul sound of Philadelphia into his diverse musical output. His dual heritage—half Sudanese, half African American—profoundly shaped his artistry. He drew inspiration from accomplished singers, guitarists, and poets on his Sudanese side, and from gospel singers, bluegrass guitarists, and older cousins who introduced him to hip-hop on his American side. Ironically, it was his father who provided the vinyl records that ignited his passion for hip-hop production.

Collaborations and Acclaimed Projects

Since focusing on hip-hop in 1999, Oddisee has collaborated with a notable roster of artists, including Gary Shider, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Talib Kweli, J-Live, Asheru, and Little Brother. His distinctive style, which spans various facets of hip-hop, appeals to a broad audience. Alongside his "Low Budget Crew," which includes artists like Cy Young, Kevin Brown, and Kenn Starr, Oddisee has made a significant impact on the D.C. metropolitan hip-hop scene.

In 2008, Oddisee signed with Mello Music Group, releasing a series of critically acclaimed projects such as 101, Mental Liberation, Everything Changed Nothing, Odd Seasons, and Traveling Man. He also co-founded the influential group Diamond District with Uptown XO and yU, releasing their debut album In the Ruff in 2009.

Commercial Recognition and Solo Success

Oddisee's music has gained broader recognition through placements on ESPN during the NBA Finals and in commercials for brands like Quiksilver and Burton Snowboards. His debut solo album, People Hear What They See, released in 2012 on Mello Music Group, masterfully blends his life experiences—from D.C. politics to global struggles, love, selfishness, and personal growth—with intricate beats and soulful harmonies.

Current Endeavors

Currently, Oddisee balances his time between Brooklyn, New York; his hometown of D.C.; and London. He continues to tour extensively, develop emerging artists, consult for Mello Music Group, and create new music. Oddisee remains a dynamic force in the music community, celebrated for his unique production skills and lyrical prowess.
