History

Born Laurence Mazel on Nov 1, 1948 in Cambridge, MA; Died Mar 8, 2006 in Guilford, VT. Married: Margie Serkin. Two children: Lena and Miles. Adopted the name “Raphe Malik” while working with Cecil Taylor. One of the greatest exponents of the avant garde trumpet during the late 20th and very early 21st centuries. He played in R&B bands as a young man growing up in the greater Boston area. He also was fluent in Mandarin Chinese and self-taught in a wide variety of subjects. He briefly attended Antioch (Yellow Springs) where be met Cecil Taylor and Jimmy Lyons. He played with both musicians during the 1970s and with Cecil in the 1980s, 90s, early 21st Century. He was the leader on numerous CDs. Toward the end of his life, he toured several times with Sabir Mateen. Among his accomplishments is a solo trumpet CD called Speak Easy.
