Biography

François Couturier (° 05/02/1950 in Fleury-les-Aubrais) is a french jazz pianist and composer. He has studied musicology and classical piano. Couturier has performed in numerous groups and collaborations. In 1977, he founded the group 'Impression'. In 1978 he met Jean-Paul Celea, with whom he became very close and has played a lot. After 1978 he has played and performed with Daniel Humair, François Jeanneau, Michel Portal et Didier Lockwood. Couturier was granted the Django Reinhardt-price by the 'Académie du Jazz' in 1980. Thereafter, he continued to play in different formations, including the Couturier-Celea Quintet, the Black Moon-quintet and the group 'Passagio', amongst others. Couturier is also a member of the Anouar Brahem Trio. He has recently released an album under his own name, 'Nostalghia - Song for Tarkovsky' (ECM, 2006), which is dedicated to and inspired by the Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky.
