Biography Jeroen Van Vliet

Jeroen van Vliet, born April 1965 in Rosmalen, the Netherlands, studied piano with Willem Kühne and Bert van den Brink. In 1991 he graduated cumlaude at the Conservatory of Utrecht. At 19, he won both, the first and the soloist price, at the Middelsee Jazztreffen Leeuwarden and three years later he did the same at the prestigious Meervaart Jazzconcours in Amsterdam.

Van Vliet gained recognition by working in the groups of Paul van Kemenade and Eric van der Westen. During the years he worked with international artists as (a.o.) Bob Malach, Kenny Wheeler, John Zorn, Norma Winstone, Charly Mariano en Erkan Ogur. The last few years his cooperation with trumpeter Eric Vloeimans is very rewarding, both as a duo as well as in the group Gatecrash that won an Edison Award in 2007. Here he uses the Fender Rhodes and additional electronica. Dick de Graaf's quartet is another group that is doing well, the album Moving Target is one result of that.

Jeroen van Vliet composes for different duo's and trio's, for choreographer Conny Janssen, for theatergroup Tuig.

As a sideman van Vliet recorded about 35 albums, as a leader 5: Who's Afraid (1995, solo-piano), Red Sun (2001, met Dré Pallemaerts en Frans van der Hoeven), En Blanc et Noir (2002, met Michael Moore en Eric van der Westen); Unseen Land (2005, met Mete Eker); The Poet & Other Tales (2008, met Pascal Vermeer en Frans van der Hoeven). In 2006 van Vliet was commissioned a 'Carte Blanche' from the Bimhuis, Amsterdam. The concert was broadcated on national radio and consisted of a free quartet-set and a composed set performed by piano-trio, stringquartet and clarinet.

In 2008 the new group Estafest! with Oene van Geel (viola), Anton Goudsmit (guitar) and Mete Erker (saxes) started: energetic, exciting and adventurous. The new Jeroen van Vliet – trio (with Pascal Vermeer and Frans van der Hoeven) recorded the cd “The Poet & Other Tales” in Oslo at the Rainbow Studio with Jan Erik Komgshaug. On the album the acoustic music is being supplemented with electronica and soundscapes.
